A Commitment to Human Values

For Jake Burgess, becoming a personal injury attorney was a conscious decision to advocate for the dignity and rights of individuals, not the profit margins of insurance companies.

“In our nation’s civil justice system, there are two distinct sides,” he explains. “One seeks to uphold human values — the ability to live fully and meaningfully which has been taken away due to neglect or disregard for safety — while the other protects corporate interests focused on profit that say human values aren’t worth much or anything at all. I chose to uphold human values.”

Prior to practicing law, Jake worked in the addiction treatment field. His experiences helping individuals recover from substance use disorder shaped his deep commitment to service, ultimately leading him to pursue a legal career where he could amplify his impact.

Both during and after earning his Juris Doctorate from West Virginia University College of Law, he devoted himself exclusively to representing injury victims and their families. Throughout his career, he has never represented an insurance company and never will.

“I entered the study of law with a single purpose: to help people,” he says. “For each case I handle, I seek to honor the human experience felt by those who have suffered injury or the tragic loss of a loved one.”

Building Connections Through Service

Today, Jake views the attorney-client relationship as the foundation of his practice.

“What matters most to me as an attorney is earning our clients’ trust and helping them navigate the aftermath of life-altering events with clarity, support, and unwavering advocacy.”

Every case represents a deeply personal journey — a journey where no amount of money can undo the harm suffered. Whether it’s a mother longing to hold her child without her neck constantly aching, a husband hoping he can put on a brave face through the migraine for a night out with his wife, a son who won’t be able to play football at the level he could before, or a grandparent longing to walk pain-free with a grandchild through the park, his goal is to seek compensation that honors the depth of their loss and helps restore as much dignity and quality of life as possible.

Relentlessly Pursuing Justice

From the start, Jake prepares every case for trial, knowing that relentless preparation and rigorous investigation are key to true justice. He refuses to let insurance companies and corporate defendants reduce Truitt Law Offices’ clients to numbers on a balance sheet.

In every negotiation and courtroom battle, he demands accountability, fights for full compensation, and ensures the human story behind every injury is never forgotten.

For him, justice means more than winning — it means validating each client’s pain, their voice, and their journey.

When not practicing law, Jake enjoys spending time with his family. He also enjoys watching movies and ongoing legal study to sharpen his skills.
